There is a wonderful energy between the winding down of the holidays and the first week of the New Year. It can be a time of reflection – a time to look back on the challenges and blessings of the past year to release what you would like to let go of and bring forward more of what you wish to see. It felt especially poignant this year as we brought 2020 – and all that it represented – to a close and rung in 2021. This ripe transition period is an excellent time to set New Year’s intentions.
But New Year’s Intentions often fall by the wayside. I have heard recently that 25% of resolution makers give up by the end of the first week of January, and by the end of the month 92% have gone back to old habits and ways of being.
I imagine this is especially true this year, given how intense and chaotic our first week of 2021 turned out to be!
So, how can you be part of the successful 8% this year in the midst of all the chaos? I have five tips.
Tip #1: Find ways to compassionately manage stress. Life has always had its stressors, but 2020 showed itself to be more intense in every way, and 2021 shows no signs of letting up. When you are stressed, it is hard to make the changes you want to make and much easier to fall into old, comfortable patterns that may not lead you in the direction of your intention. Tip #2: Set boundaries around news consumption and “doom scrolling” on social media. I am COACHING MYSELF on this point! This past year it has been a challenge to walk the thin line between informed and insane, but I find that setting boundaries and time limits help me focus FIRST on what I have determined are my top priorities.
Tip #3: Set your intentions from the energy of “Your Highest Good” rather than “Should.” You can tell your intention is coming from “Should” when your body feels tight or contracted and everything feels like a struggle. Intentions set from “Your Highest Good”, however, come from love and expansion, a place where everything is possible.
For example, feel the difference in your body between “I should lose weight because I am too fat” versus “I intend to make healthier choices because I care deeply about my health and well-being.”
If it feels like your intention is coming from “should” is there a way you can re-word it to come from “your highest good?”
Tip #4: If you are serious about your intention, develop a reasonable action plan. This may mean reading books on the subject, hiring professional help or joining a group of others with similar goals. The best action plans also have means for getting back on track when you inevitably go astray.
Tip #5: Look deeply at what has held you back in the past. Are there habits you just can’t seem to break or goals you just can’t seem to reach no matter how hard you try? Can you stay on course for a while, but then some trigger causes you to go right back to square one? If you have been making the same resolution year after year and trying every method out there with little to no success, chances are you are carrying around unhealed wounds or limiting beliefs.
In my opinion, this is the number one reason why 92% of all New Year’s Intentions fail. Trying to set New Year’s Resolutions to change life-long habits or patterns without addressing these old beliefs or wounds is like trying to plant a beautiful garden in a bed of prickly weeds.
The part of our mind that controls old habits and patterns, unhealed wounds and dis-empowering beliefs is non-verbal and doesn’t respond to our usual forms of communication. EFT/Tapping, however, is a gentle process that works directly with this part of the mind. By tapping on the acupressure points while holding a strong emotional focus, old emotional wounds can resolve and the roots of these old habits can finally, at long last, shift.
If you have set clear intentions year after year but nothing has worked so far, I would love to offer you a free consultation on how EFT/Tapping might help you shift your old habits and beliefs and achieve your goals. It might just make the difference between falling into the 92% of failed intentions and joining the 8% of successful ones. To schedule a free consultation, click here.
